Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685),

was a Dutch Golden Age painter of genre works. He lived and worked in Haarlem his entire life.  Ostade was the contemporary of the Flemish painters David Teniers the Younger and Adriaen Brouwer. Like them, he spent his life in delineation of the homeliest subjects: tavern scenes, village fairs and country quarters. According to the RKD, he became a pupil in 1627 of the portrait painter Frans Hals, at that time the master of Jan Miense Molenaer. couple of hundred drawings and watercolours. Van Ostade was a popular artist in his day. Among his pupils was his younger brother Isaack van Ostade, Cornelis Bega and probably also Jan Steen. The displayed painting is a crop from Peasants Drinking at a Window, c. (1640-70).
