William Artaud (1763–1823)

• Was an English painter of portraits and biblical subjects.
• Artaud was the son of a London jeweler.
• He was awarded an award at the Society of Arts in 1776.
• His first exhibition at the Royal Academy was in 1780.
• He was a student at the Royal Academy Schools, winning a silver medal in 1783, the gold medal, in 1786, and the traveling student schooling nine years later.
• He painted both portraits and biblical subjects.
• His models included Francesco Bartolozzi, Samuel Parr, Joseph Priestley, William Herschel and other stellar figures of the time.
• Some of his biblical themes were recorded for the Macklin Bible.
• Art historian Kasper Georg Nagler appoints a list of engravings of paintings Artaud in his New Dictionary General of Artists. 
• His last exhibition at the Royal Academy was in 1822.
