Jan van Amstel (c.1490-1500 – c. 1537-1544)

• He was probably an older brother of Pieter Aertsen and a brother-in-law of Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
• Jan van Amstel is associated with the under emergency name Braunschweiger Monogrammist painter; letters J V A M S L.

• Jan van Amstel was married to one Adriane van Doornicke.
• He went to the southern Netherlands and was registered as a free master in 1528 Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke.
• After her husband died, his widow married again in 1544 and had a son who would also become a painter Gillis from Coninxloo.
