Marten van Cleve I, ca. (1527–1581),
• Was a Flemish painter.
• He was active in Antwerp between 1551 and 1581.
• Van Cleve is known for his genre scenes with peasants and landscapes.
• He was son of Willem van Cleve the Elder, master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke.
• His borthers Hendrick van Cleve III and his younger brother Willem van Cleve the Younger were both also painters.
• Marten van Cleve studied under Frans Floris.
• Marten became a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1551.
• With his wife Maria de Greve had four sons named Gillis, Marten, Joris and Nicolaas who all became painters.
• One of his pupils may have been Hans Jordaens.
• When Marten died in 1581, he was suffering from gout and rheumatism.
