David Teniers the Younger (1610 – 1690)

• Was a Flemish Baroque painter.
• Around 1650 Teniers moved to Brussels to formally enter into the service of the Archduke as a court painter.
• The Archduke asked him to be the keeper of the art gallery he had set up in his palace in Brussels.
• One of Teniers's key tasks in this position was to look after and enlarge the Archducal collection.
• He was involved in the purchase of a large number of Italian, and especially Venetian, masterpieces from the confiscated collections of Charles I of England and his Jacobite supporters.
• One of his most important successes was the acquisition of the major part (about 400 paintings) of the collection owned by James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton, who had been a close associate and favorite of the English King and was, like the King, executed in 1649.
• The displayed painting is a crop from:  David Teniers the Younger, The Village Doctor.
