Bartolomé de Cárdenas (1547 - ca.1628)

• Was a Portuguese painter who worked in Spain.
• According to Antonio Palomino, Cardenas was a native of Portugal, who, while still very young, went to Madrid, where he became the pupil of Alonso Sanchez Coello.
• He painted most of the cloisters of the convent of Nuestra Senora de Atocha, at Madrid.
• In the later part of his life he went to Valladolid, where he painted many altar-pieces, and decorated the cloisters of the convent of San Pablo.
• In 1622 in Valladolid he was named painter of the city in an honorary capacity.
• When his protector, the Duke of Lerma, died in 1625 and the paintings of the altarpiece of San Pablo were finished, he returned to Madrid where he died on April 26, 1628.
• He was married to Jerónima de Oviedo and left his son-in-law, Juan Mateo, as his testamentary, who was also a painter.
