El Greco - Doménikos Theotokópoulos (1541 – 1614)

• Was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance.
• "El Greco" was a nickname, often adding the word Krēs, Cretan.
•El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia (modern Crete), which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice.
• He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice.
• In 1577, El Greco migrated to Madrid, then to Toledo, where he produced his mature works.
• The Art historian José Camón Aznar had attributed between 787 and 829 paintings to the Cretan master, Wethey reduced the number to 285 authentic works.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Boy Blowing on Ember, 1571/1572.
