Georges Reverdy (1529-1564)
• Was a French wood and copper engraver of the Lyon Renaissance.
• His corpus attests that he subsequently worked with copper.
• In 1538, he was hailed as a painter by the poet Nicolas Bourbon, who named him “ Georgius Reperdius ”.
• However, there is no document or work attesting that he was a painter.
• He is one of the first engravers to work for amateurs, fond of historical, mythological subjects often from ancient Rome.
• His death was detected in his son Étienne's apprenticeship contract with the goldsmith Étienne Carta in 1565.
• He lived in the Notre-Dame-de-Confort district and lives near Corneille de Lyon.
• He produced 17 printing marks for his in-laws.
• We know about sixty prints.
• Baudrier attributes to him the illustrations of the Promptuaire des médailles published by Guillaume Rouillé, which he would have produced jointly with Corneille de Lyon.
• Reverdy illustrates De piscibus marinis, by Guillaume Rondelet, published by Macé Bonhomme, which is the first treatise on ichthyology published in France.
