Hendrick Hondius I (1573–1650)

• Was an engraver, draftsman, publisher and author in Holland.
• He was a son of the schoolmaster Guiliam de Hondt from it Brabant Duffel.
• Hendrik apprenticed to the engraver Jan Wierix in Antwerp.
• Driven by being Protestant he traveled to beliefs Cologne, London and Paris, to eventually get involved The Hague to settle. • In 1597 he enrolled at the Guild of Saint Luke.
• He got a privilege to have a portrait of prince Maurits van Oranje to press.
• After passages in Amsterdam (1603) and Lead (1604) he returned to The Hague in 1605.
• He ran a print business until 1640 Buitenhof when he sold it.
• He was buried on October 25 or 29, 1650. 
• His seven children with Sara Jansdochter, Willem and Hendrik III also became engravers themselves. 
• During his career, Hondius made more than 250 prints, in addition to the work he released from colleagues.
• He drew his own designs and engraved artists like Jan Wildens, Pieter Stevens, David Vinckboons, Pieter Bruegel and Lucas van Leyden
• He also illustrated books by Hans Vredeman de Vries and Samuel Marolois.
• His first known print dates from 1594.
