Jan van Eyck (c.  before 1390 – 1441),

• Was a Netherlandish painter.
• He was from the County of Loon (present day Belgium) active in Bruges. 
• About 20 surviving paintings are confidently attributed to him.
• Van Eyck painted both secular and religious subject matter, altarpieces, single-panel religious figures and portraits.
• He was appointed as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy.
• Van Eyck was the only 15th-century Netherlandish painter to sign his canvases.
• Jan van Eyck died on 9 July 1441, in Bruges.
