Jan van Kessel the Elder (1626 – 1679)

• Was a Flemish painter.
• A versatile artist he practised in many genres including studies of insects, floral still lifes, marines, river landscapes, paradise landscapes, allegorical compositions, scenes with animals and genre scenes.
• He was born in Antwerp.
• He was the son of Hieronymus van Kessel and Paschasia Brueghel (the daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder).
• He was thus Jan Brueghel the Elder's grandson, Pieter Bruegel the Elder's great-grandson.
• Between 1650 and 1675 van Kessel produced more than 300 paintings on small copper plates.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Jan van Kessel the Elder, Insects with Common Hawthorn and Forget-Me-Not 1654.
