was a Flemish painter. A versatile artist he practised in many genres including studies of insects, floral still lifes, marines, river landscapes, paradise landscapes, allegorical compositions, scenes with animals and genre scenes. He was born in Antwerp as the son of Hieronymus van Kessel the Younger and Paschasia Brueghel (the daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder). He was thus Jan Brueghel the Elder's grandson, Pieter Bruegel the Elder's great-grandson. Between 1650 and 1675 van Kessel produced more than 300 paintings on small copper plates. The displayed painting is a crop from: Insects with Common Hawthorn and Forget-Me-Not 1654.
