Stoop Maerten (1618-1647)

• Was a Dutch painter.
• Born: 1618 in Rotterdam.
• Died: 1647 in Utrecht.
• His father was the glass painter Willem Jansz. van Stoop.
• His brother Dirk Stoop was a widely travelled painter and engraver.

• Maerten specialised in genre painting and in particular guardroom subjects, portraying off-duty officers in scenes of relaxation and merriment.

• He is often linked with Nicolaes Knupfer on stylistic grounds; the two were contemporaries in their studies at the artist's guild in Utrecht.
