Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)
• Was a Flemish painter, artist and diplomat.
• By fourteen he began his artistic apprenticeship with Tobias Verhaeght.
• Subsequently, he studied under two painters, Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen.
• He was married twice and had 8 children.
• The catalogue of his works by Michael Jaffé lists 1,403 pieces, excluding numerous copies made in his workshop.
• His most famous pupil was the young Anthony van Dyck.
• He collaborated with the many specialists active in the city Antwerp, including the animal painter Frans Snyders, and his good friend the flower-painter Jan Brueghel the Elder.
• Rubens and Brueghel executed about 25 joint works in the period from 1598 to 1625.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Marchesa Brigida Spinola Doria, 1606.
