Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674)

• Was a Brabançon-born French Baroque era painter.
• Born of a poor family in Brussels.
• Champaigne was a pupil of the landscape painter Jacques Fouquières.
• He made several paintings for the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, dating from 1638.
• He was a founding member of the Académie de peinture et de sculpture in Paris.
• His pupils were his nephew Jean Baptiste de Champaigne, William Faithorne, Jean Morin, and Nicolas de Plattemontagne. • During his last period Champaigne painted mainly religious subjects and family members.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Philippe de Champaigne, Adam and Eve Mourning the Death of Abel, 1656.
