Sir Henry Raeburn (1756 – 1823),
• Was a British portrait painter.
• Raeburn was Scotland's first significant portrait painter since the Union to remain based in Scotland.
• He served as Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland.
• He was unusual amongst many of his contemporaries, such as Reynolds, in the extent of his philosophy of painting directly from life; he made no preliminary sketches.
• This attitude partly explains the often coarse modelling and clashing colour combinations he employed.
