Thomas R. A. Gainsborough (1727–1788)

• Was an English portrait and landscape painter.
• He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, the youngest son of John Gainsborough.
• Gainsborough was allowed to leave home in 1740 to study art in London, where he trained under engraver Hubert Gravelot.
• Despite being a prolific portrait painter, Gainsborough gained greater satisfaction from his landscapes.
• Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy.
• Gainsborough's only known assistant was his nephew, Gainsborough Dupont.
• In the last year of his life he collaborated with John Hoppner.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Thomas R. A. Gainsborough, The Hon. Mrs. Thomas Graham, c. 1775/77.
