Jeremiah Theus (1716–1774)

• Was a Swiss-born American painter. 
• Theus was born in the city of Chur. in the Swiss canton.
• He was nineteen when he immigrated with his family to the Province of South Carolina.
• Theus was twenty-eight in 1744, yet he already felt confident enough to open a drawing school in his home.
• In the three decades he spent in Charleston he was able to build a highly successful practice for himself as a painter.
• He married twice during his time in Charleston.
• Theus died in Charleston in 1774.
